Friday Five!

Hello Friends!  I hope everyone has had a great week.  Mine has been exhausting and I’m glad it is over and I have some down time this week.  The 2013 National Leading Age Conference was in Dallas this week and it consumed more of my time than I had planned – if you’ve never spent time with people that work in long term care and senior living you’re really missing out.  Not only do we work hard, my work week started last Sunday at 7:00 am, some of us tend to party hard too… maybe harder than we should, but anyway I digress.  I still don’t feel like I’m doing the best job of keeping up with the blog and realize I still need to write part 2 of my trip to Kansas City and running the 1/2 Marathon, but I can at least come up with another Friday Five and this one is dedicated to the current top 5 songs on my running or driving with the top down playlist:

  1. Cedric Gervais & Howard Jones – Things Can Only Get Better (Remix) It’s Howard Jones so and a little bit of techno, so how can you not love this song?  And if you don’t know who Howard Jones is you need to spend sometime studying the awesome music of the 80s and I’d also suggest that you watch Pretty in Pink, the Breakfast Club, Back to the Future, 16 Candles and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off because you obvioulsy weren’t blessed with the good fortune to grow up in the 80s. Oh and invest in some good early Madonna while you’re at it.
  2. Brit Nicole – Gold: I wake up between 4:00 and 4:30 am 5 days a week to run so I sometimes need something on the positive side and this has it all, Girl Power Message with a good beat!
  3. Robin Thicke – Blurred Lines: I know this might be a controversial choice, but its my playlist and you don’t have to listen to it!
  4. a-ha – Take On Me: Another classic 80s hit, but this is the original no remix needed.  And if your still struggling with the awesomeness of the 80s please referr to #1.
  5. Snow Patrol – Just Say Yes:  Back at the end of 2012, someone shared this song on their blog and suggested it as a personal theme song.  I picked it as mine for 2013 and some pretty awesome things have happened, things that I’ve talked about doing for years.  I’m still using it as my personal theme song because there is so much more that I need to, “just say yes,” too in 2013!

It actually was hard to narrow down the list to just 5 because I have so many great songs that get me moving in the morning so maybe I’ll do another sample from the AuntJenFox play list soon!

Friday Five!

Friday Five lists seem to be all the rage in the blogosphere and I’ve been meaning to do one and somehow just never get around to it.  But not today, I actually left work at a decent hour and am just hanging at home tonight in anticipation of my 20 Mile run tomorrow so here’s my first

Friday Five: A List of My Favorite Websites/Apps that keep me motivated and moving.

1) TASTEdaily:  describes itself as, “Ridiculously awesome daily emails for bold women.” This is a daily email that covers everything from “mix tapes,” diet and exercise tips, fashion advice, to awesome and inspiring quotes and stories for women., plus a book club!  Every morning Monday – Friday I can’t wait to open up my email to see what’s new!  It can be a little hit or miss, but usually its more hit than miss.

2) MyFitnessPal: I’ve come to the decision that until I’m ready to commit to Whole 30, and I’m giving it serious consideration, counting calories is the way to go for me.  Myfitnesspal makes this so easy, the app has an extensive database of foods and activity and also has a bar code scanner.  I’ve used the Weight Watchers mobile app and Weight Watchers.com, but in my opinion and I used to work for Weight Watchers, myfitnesspal is hands down much more reliable and easier to use.

3) Pandora: I know there’s lots of debate in the professional music world about internet based music sites like Pandora and Spotify, but I LOVE Pandora.  I have it on both my phones, iPad and listen to it ALL of time on my laptop.  You can use Pandora for free to create “stations,” based on your music preferences and then it continues to make selections that are similar to your searches.  I’ve discovered some great new artists and songs thanks to Pandora and have some crazy mixed up stations that I’ve created.  Pandora is free, but I think the $36.00 yearly subscription is worth every penny.

4) Daily Mile: Yes, I am one of those people who constantly post EVERY single run to my Facebook page.  Sorry, but knowing I’ve got to post that run and that someone will comment or like that post keeps my accountable.  Daily Mile serves as my running log and I love being able to go back and look at my total mileage for the week, month, year etc.

5) St. Jude Children’s Hospital Marathon: Have I mentioned recently that I’m running a marathon in December?I’ve committed to raising funds as a St. Jude Hero to support St. Jude’s lifesaving mission of finding cures and saving children. I need your support to help me reach my fundraising goal for the kids of St. Jude.

It costs $1.8 million a day to operate St. Jude. Did you know that 70% of the funds come from the public? That means your donation, no matter what the size, will help!

How your donation helps:

  • Thanks to donors like you, no family ever pays St. Jude for anything, including lodging, food and travel.
  • St. Jude will continue to improve treatment of childhood cancer and other deadly diseases through it’s groundbreaking research.
  • For every child treated at St. Jude, thousands more have been saved worldwide through St. Jude discoveries.

Thank you for your support!

Happy Weekend and Goodluck to Everyone Running Marine Corps Marathon!

Kansas City Part 1

Good Evening Friends – Really I promise I’m going to get better at this blogging business and start doing more frequent posts, I promise!  Of course Eddie is not impressed, but generally he dislikes anything that pulls my focus away from him.

Not impressed.

Not impressed.

This past weekend I made a trip to Kansas City and was able to spend some quality time with my Kansas City Family.  Prior to moving to Dallas, and my sister’s spare bedroom, I had lived in the Kansas City area for 12 years, and I have been fortunate to have established some very strong friendships.  I hadn’t been back to KC since my move to do anything fun and hadn’t seen my very best friends – Rick & Jerry, Nell, Sabrina, and my friends from the Elite 11 Pace Group.  As an added bonus this was the weekend of the Kansas City Marathon and one of my favorite times of year in Kansas City!

So after consulting with Rick, we decided he would pick me up at the airport on Thursday morning and we would make a quick trip to Silver Dollar City in Branson… yes, Branson.  Rick & Jerry love Roller Coasters and they’ve sucked me into the thrill and SDC just happens to have the only wooden roller coaster that inverts you twice – Outlaw Run– and IT IS AWESOME! And if you’ve never experienced the cheesiness that is SDC you really are missing out.  How can you not love handcrafts, glass blowing, candlemaking, hill billys and all that goes along with life in the Ozarks.  This might surprise some of you but I LOVE IT!

So Rick and I have been friends for about 9 years now, and I would have to say that he’s probably the nearest thing to a soul mate that I have.  Sadly he’s just not that into me, but I love his other half Jerry too.  I can go months without seeing Rick and/or Jerry and when we get back together its like we’ve never been apart.  Rick tolerates my running (ignoring all my facebook posts that are running related), but he was there at the finish line for my very first marathon!  And I try to accept his love of the Royals and all things baseball related, (but I love hotdogs and beer so that’s not too difficult).  He also appreciates the Captain and Tennille, Love Will Keep Us Together!  So anyway, I was not surprised that when Rick picked me up on Thursday morning that all of the following occurred 1)He was late (but so was I in a way), 2)We had to go to his church to take care of a few things and 3)he still needed to pack.  Of course is would not be uncommon for me to pull the very same thing with him 🙂

Sadly we are both unhealthy, workaholics so we both spent way too much time emailing, texting and talking to work… Rickatwork

But we did ride Outlaw Run, Fire in the Hole (my very firs coaster,) Wildfire, and Powder Keg; before consuming a funnel cake and buying out the candy store. wildfire

Thursday night we kept it classy and hung out in our hotel room, the Branson Hotel; drank moonshine and beer and ate pizza and most of the candy we purchased at Brown’s Candy shop.  candyDid I mention that I was planning to un a 1/2 Marathon on Saturday?  And just in case you missed the memo I can open a bottle of beer with the side of my fist.  I think I learned that skill back in my days at the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra or it might have been at Oklahoma City University – but either way it comes in handy when you have a 6 pack of pop tops and no bottle opener!

Friday morning we headed back out to SDC, but it was crowMoonshineded and Outlaw Run was down so we decided to get our Old Timey Picture taken!  I have it on tin type and everything. I am so sorry that I didn’t scan the picture in and I don’t have the password for the website to share – but we dressed as bandits and had guns!

Then after a little more shopping, it was time to hit the road as Rick had to work a wedding at his church, he’s the wedding coordinator, and I had an appointment with the bar at Bluestem, and our friend Sabrina aka Sadrinka. The lounge at Bluestem is one of my all time favorite place and really whats wrong with eating Shrimp and Grits, this delightful Smore concoction and drinking some red wine the night before a race? bluestem

Stay tuned for part 2 – the race and more roller coasters!

Passing the Test

I can’t sleep so figured I’d better finish this up and get it posted!  Last Friday was the big day, the day I was scheduled to take the Nursing Home Administrator Licensing Examination: State Based Examination for Texas.  While I am already licensed in the great State of Kansas, Texas will give you a temporary license; but you have 6 months to take a test on things like room temperatures, how many days worth of non-perishable food items you need to keep on hand, and how quickly your generator needs to kick on if you lose power, (71-81 degrees F, 7 Days, & 10 Seconds).  I was a little nervous going in as most of this stuff I know, but sometimes the way the question is asked can trip you up.  Needless to say – 100 questions & 30 minutes I was out of there with this, I PASSED NAB  So with that behind me & it being Friday afternoon and all, I definitely deserved a little celebration and I did manage a lovely dinner with the family at a local Mexican joint, which resulted in the consumption of 2 of these beautiful and delicious beverages. drinkAnd for those of you that know me really well, I’m sure you’re shocked that I only had 2!  But with a 5 year old in tow and a sister and brother in-law that don’t share my love for hooch it was a pretty calm night for AuntJen.  Besides I had yet another test waiting for me on Saturday morning – my long run…yes I had an 18 Miler on the schedule and knew the weather gods were not going to be kind to us.

No we're not lost, traffic light somewhere around mile 13.

No we’re not lost, traffic light somewhere around mile 13.

So Saturday morning, I was up and out the door before the crack of dawn, ready to hit the streets of Dallas with my friends from the 4:40 Pace Group from the Dallas Running Club.  The car said it was 78 at 5:50 am and the sun wasn’t even up yet!  Never mind the humidity in the low 80s.

This was another tough run, and I wasn’t really looking forward to it, but I had good company and we had a new route and really the miles seemed to fly by.  I will confess that at about mile 15 I was cursing running and ready to quit, but then I made it to mile 16 and it just didn’t seem to make sense to stop!

I did try out my new Injinji Compression Socks and I think I might be in lovesocks.

So I’ve passed my test with a month and a half left on the provisional license – the fact that I’m not taking my test on December 6, the day before it expires is a really coup for me a master procrastinator – and I’ve got a solid 18 miler in the books for this training cycle.  I passed the test!

Now, I’m headed to Kansas City this weekend to visit some friends and I’m planning to run the Kansas City Half.  Hard to believe this was my very first race 3 years ago, but more on that later.

Just Another Manic Monday…

Happy Monday Friends! The theme song for today really was, “Just Another Manic Monday,” thought I would share with you a glimpse of the life of a nursing home administrator who happens to be training for a marathon and living with her sister:

4:30 am – Up and out of bed, take the dogs out, feed my dog and then its out the door for an easy 4 mile recovery run.shoes

5:30 am – Make my smoothie and coffee and then hit the shower, (my recovery run pace is very, very slow and I took a wrong turn on my way back to the house)

7:00 am – Get a hug and a kiss from my niece as she’s headed out the door for school with her mother.

7:10 a.m. – Ready to leave for work, decide to let dogs out one last time before heading to our corporate office in Irving for the final budget review meeting and a conference call with my boss, the CEO, COO and some other important people.

7:11 am – Realize that the patio door locked behind me and I’m stuck outside with no way back in the house, two dogs, and no cell phone. After some McGyveresq attempts to break into the house, walk across the street and borrow the soccer mom’s cell phone.

8:05 a.m. – Sister finally arrives from work and let’s me and the dogs back in the house.  Missed my conference call and will now be an hour late for budget meeting.

8:25 a.m. – Get a text that “State” is in the building (bet you didn’t know that nursing homes are the 2nd most regulated industry in the U.S. did you?), get off the phone with my boss, change directions and high-tail it to my building – no budget meeting. for me!  Make several phone calls and check messages while en route (I know I shouldn’t check email while driving.)

9:15 a.m. – Arrive at work, find out what the surveyor needs and check in with staff. Make rounds, answer emails, return phone calls, deal with resident concerns that came up over the weekend.

12:45 – Eat lunch while checking in with my boss who is at the budget meeting and get prepped for meeting at 3:00 p.m. with a major hospital system and a bunch of really important people. Weigh-in for team weight loss challenge at work – work scale is only 1lbs off from my scale at home!

1:30 p.m. Staff meeting to discuss residents with past due balances and other financial concerns.

2:30 p.m. Rounds with surveyor to interview residents and look at areas treated for fire ant infestation.

3:00 p.m. Decide I’m not going to make the important meeting with the hospital, text boss before iphone dies.

4:00 p.m. Surveyor leaves, all four complaints are cleared!

4:15 p.m. Back on the phone with my boss to talk about tomorrow’s meetings, resident complaints, and develop a game plan for the yet to be finished 2014 budget.

5:00 p.m. Butts and Guts Class in the Wellness Center – exactly what it sounds like.

5:30 p.m. Back to office to review a new concern, sign invoices and answer emails.

6:15 pm Leave for home.

6:50 pm Make it home in record time, great night to drive home with the top down!

7:00 p.m. Walk to the park with the dogs, my sister and my niece.dogs

7:45 p.m. Finally eat dinner, while answering emails and texts messages from work and checking Facebook. Thanks to my sister for feeding me tonight.

Dinner, well at least a major component.

Dinner, well at least a major component.

8:30 pm Log final meal in myfitnesspal only to realize I’m 68 calories over for the day and really need to eat more protein.

9:30 p.m. Sit down to write this post while my dog sulks that I’m not playing with him.

10:00 p.m. Time for bed so I can get up and do it all over again!

Sweaty Sixteen

In my last post I wrote about the great 16 mile run I had last weekend, it was the kind of run that makes you feel confident in your abilities to actually run a full marathon.  Well, I had 16 on the schedule again for this weekend.  Honestly I wasn’t too concerned about this run.  I had a pretty decent week of training, had been eating well aside from a few margaritas on Tuesday night, work hadn’t been too stressful, and the weather had been near perfect for running.  What was there to worry about?

I was due for a new pair of running shoes, so not having enough time to actually go to a store I hopped on-line Monday morning and ordered a new pair of my Brooks Adrenaline 13s.  I love these shoes… Anyway, I thought I had changed the shipping address, but they ended up at my old work in Kansas, so no new shoes for Saturday.

Yes, I really did need a new pair!

Yes, I really did need a new pair!

Then, Friday arrived and I was actually excited about my long run the next day.  I managed to get all my stuff organized and ready for the morning, ate a decent dinner and was in bed by 9:30pm.  Then I couldn’t get to sleep, my legs started cramping, I had to pee no less that 3 times (sorry for the TMI) and then the smoke detector in my run decided to go off for a brief moment.  Not a good nights rest.  When the alarm went off at 4:30 a.m. I really wasn’t feeling it. When I let the dogs out they proceeded to bark in an attempt to wake up the whole neighborhood and succeeded in waking up my sister.  Not a great start to the day.  After getting the dogs back inside and getting out the door I realized that it was considerably warmer and much more humid than it had been in days… uh oh.  Heat and humidity are not good combinations for a long run.

We started off at 6:00 a.m. and I was soaked with sweat by the end of the first mile and the sun wasn’t even up yet!  How were we going to survive 16 miles in these conditions?  Fortunately, I run with a pretty positive group of people, thanks 4:40 DRC peeps.  We also had the benefit of cloud cover, a decent breeze from time to time, and a relatively flat course.  But this run was a struggle. It was a run where you ask yourself why you willing get up 5 mornings a week before 4:30 a.m. to hit the road, why does it matter if you run a marathon, wouldn’t you be better off if you’d just stayed in bed this morning?

Mile 13

Mile 13

This run wasn’t so much about the physical side of running as it was about the mental side of running.  While this was a physical test, I knew that I could run the distance – hadn’t I just run 16 the week before?  This was a mental test, how bad did I want a sub 5:00 hour marathon in Memphis?  How bad did I want to see the scale continue to move down?  How much did I enjoy feeling strong and like I could conquer anything life threw at me?

Turns out I want it pretty bad.  I am not the fastest runner, I am not the strongest runner, but I’m a runner and a marathoner. Knowing that I finished a tough run like Saturday’s 16 miler makes the other challenges that life throws my way easier to deal with.  The uncertainty of my home in Kansas City, an upset family member, a messy and never-ending budget process, or a resident that doesn’t think you’re doing a very good job.  My job and my life are filled with an abundance of never-ending stressors, running helps me sort through the messiness of it all and retain some sense of sanity.  I ran a marathon – bring it – I am tough enough.

A new week of training starts this week and I am ready to see what it brings.  I have a new pair of shoes to break in, thanks to some help from a friend; a new pair of compression socks are on their way, and we are almost done with the budget at work!  Bring it, I’m ready!

Pretty new shoes!

Pretty new shoes!

How has running helped you deal with the stress of life?

Sweet Sixteen.

Welcome back friends!  Sorry it has taken so long for me to write a post.  There’s been a lot going on over the past 2 weeks and well, I seem to have a bad case of writer’s block.  So please forgive me if this post is a bit rambling and not really focused.  I’ve decided the best way to get past my writer’s block is to well, just start writing…

So many carbs...and yes I ate 2 pieces of the chocolate, coolwhip thing!

So many carbs…and yes I ate 2 pieces of the chocolate, coolwhip thing!

2 weeks ago my Grandmother passed away.  Everyone asks was this expected and the answer is yes and no.  Grandma was living in a nursing home, but that’s for another post, and was doing reasonable well for her age and health conditions.  Fortunately for her and my mother she just went to sleep and didn’t wake up.  My Grandfather had passed back in March so I think she is probably where she really wants to be now.   Anyway, traveling to Oklahoma to help my Mom with the arrangements and then to attend the funeral meant a major disruption to my carefully crafted routine.   I love going to visit my Mom as I consider Fairview, the town where she lives, to be my adopted hometown.  And it was really an honor to be able to help plan the celebration of my Grandmother’s life.  I don’t mean to trivialize her passing at all.  Anyway, this is a community that believes in showing how much they care about you in times of trouble by feeding you.  We had an endless supply of food delivered to the house –  casseroles, 3 kinds of homemade cinnamon rolls, made from scratch dinner rolls, cookies, cakes, lasagna etc.  Never mind the family dinner that was served at the church following the service…  I ate like I had never seen a roll or a cinnamon roll before, I mean seriously how can you not try out all 3?  I did manage a few short runs that weekend but nothing close to the 14 mile long run that was on my schedule for that Saturday.

I returned to Dallas late Sunday evening with a tickle in the back of my throat that meant one thing, I was getting sick – 5 year olds are cute but they are germ magnets…  I woke up Monday morning not feeling so great and decided on a few more minutes of sleep over my regular run, I made a feeble attempt at speedwork on Tuesday, decided to sleep in on Wednesday, and then did half the recommended distance on Thursday.  I am not an anal retentive person in general, but when it comes to a training plan I tend to want to follow it to the letter.  So it really was hard not to have done those runs.  What was worse was the 16 mile long run looming on Saturday of last week.  I’d missed both 14 mile group runs so how was I going to manage 16 miles not feeling well and having a serious drop in mileage that week?  Fortunately, I have learned with running and training for marathons that you have to listen to your body.  Sometimes its okay to adjust your training and scale back a little.  Lucky for me, through Runner’s Edge in KC, Daily Mile, and the Dallas Running Club; I have some extremely supportive running friends that kept telling me I could do this.  Come Saturday morning my decision to scale back earlier in the week and rest paid off.  It was an absolutely gorgeous morning, perfect for a long run, and I felt like a new person.  This turned out to be one of the best long runs I’ve had in a while. It really was a Sweet 16!

I'm not naming names, but one of these cute things passed her germs on to Aunt Jen - her mother knows who she is...

I’m not naming names, but one of these cute things passed her germs on to Aunt Jen – her mother knows who she is…

Sometimes we can be our own worst enemies – we either expect too much of ourselves (perfectionist thinking) or not enough.  We tell ourselves we can’t do that or that we aren’t smart enough, pretty enough, fast enough, skinny enough what Weight Watchers calls negative self-talk.  I was lucky enough to have people around me that just kept telling me I could do this and hearing it enough times I believed that I could and I did!  I am happy to say that I’ve had a much better week of running and eating despite possibly consuming one too many margaritas on Tuesday night, but I still managed my 5 miles the next morning and on a treadmill no less!

One of my favorite quotes.

One of my favorite quotes.

So over the past couple of weeks I’ve been reminded of some important things about life:

  1. Family is the most important thing you have, make sure you tell your family how much you love them and what they really mean to you every chance you get.
  2. Sometimes it pays to rest and give yourself a break.
  3. A good support system is hard to beat!
  4. Running 16 miles in 60 Degree Weather is much easier than trying to run it in -1 degree weather and on ice and snow, (the last time I ran a 16 mile training run was in Kansas City, in February…)
  5. Rules are meant to be broken.
  6. Margaritas can make for good pre-run fuel.
  7. I have some pretty amazing running friends and a truly awesome family.
  8. It’s okay to get off track, just have a plan to get right back on track again.

    My amazing family

    My amazing family

Oh and in other news I decided for many reasons to delay my state boards until Friday, October 11 so I’ve updated my countdown.  Thanks for putting up with this rambling post and the short hiatus.  I plan to get back on a regular schedule and to put a little more focus into my posts and hopefully find my voice.

Hello My Name is Jen and I’m a WorkAholic…

Happy Monday Everyone! I’d been planning to write a post about my experience running the Back to the NFL 5K at the AT&T “Cowboys” Stadium with my family this past weekend, and I will, but today I’m in a funky mood so you’re stuck with hearing about my new life in Dallas.

Running the Fun Run with my niece

Running the Fun Run with my niece

I’ve been averaging about 100hrs a pay period at work recently and I worked all day yesterday so I took this afternoon off. I was really looking forward to it until I had to leave. We had a meeting this morning to look at a new software application and then I was done. No where I had to be and nothing specific that needed to get done and as soon as I walked out of the door from the meeting and said goodbye to my boss I felt lost…what do I do now? I could go home, but home is not really my home yet. I could run errands, but that’s not really any fun and Dallas just doesn’t feel like my city yet, not the way Kansas City felt like my city. And then my work cell rang and I felt saved. It was a quick conversation that resulted in about 5 texts and 2 emails, but sadly that quick connection to work made me feel better, not so lost.  By the way my former shrink did give me the proper diagnosis of being a workaholic a condition I chose to embrace.

Most of you know that 3 months ago I packed up my life into a “Pack-Rat,” storage container and moved to Dallas for a new job, a job I LOVE, to be closer to my family. My sister and brother in-law, who are AWESOME, opened the door to their home to me and Eddie, my 5-year-old Welsh Corgi. For those of you that don’t know me well I’ve not lived with anybody in over 15 years.  So this experience has been both wonderful and challenging at the same time – wonderful because I get to see my nieces and nephew more, challenging because as welcoming as they have been it is still their house – not mine and 95% of my stuff is still in a storage unit somewhere in Dallas.

I love these girls!

I love these girls! Being and Aunt is the best!

I feel like right now my townhouse in Kansas City is hanging around my neck like an albatross.  I had thought renting it out would be relatively easy, but so far no takers and the management company called today to talk about lowering the price.  Now I wonder if I shouldn’t go ahead and list it and try to sell even at a loss?  My sister jokingly mentioned just letting the bank foreclose the other night and that doesn’t seem like such a bad idea right now, not that I would ever do that.  5 years ago buying my townhouse seemed like such a great idea, but now… ugh!

The last 3 months have been surreal for me, I’ve been living in this transitory state, so I’ve thrown myself into the tangible things that I know how to deal with like work and marathon training. And trying to focus on the positives of living with my sister like snuggling with my niece and reading bedtime stories, seeing first hand what an amazing teacher, mother and wife my sister is and how patient my brother in-law is to put up with our crazy family and all the quality time I get to spend in my awesome car – a Volkswagen Eos – if you must deal with Dallas traffic you might as well do it in a super fun to drive, hard top convertible…

Didn't want my nephew to be left out, and yes I paid him $20 bucks to let his mom put pink in his hair. I'm a really good Aunt.

Didn’t want my nephew to be left out, and yes I paid him $20 bucks to let his mom put pink in his hair. I’m a really good Aunt.

I am learning a lot about myself and finding some validation in the choices I have made.  I Love my nieces and nephews dearly and would do anything for them, but I am certain that being a mother is not in the cards for me.  But I am also learning that it is possible to share your life with people and still hang on to who you are, yes you do have to make compromises but living with someone is not the all or nothing proposition I thought it was.

Eddie Loves His Cousin...

Eddie Loves His Cousin…

So if anyone wants to buy or rent a two bedroom townhouse in Spring Hill, KS call me!  In the meantime, I’ll be enjoying princes tea parties, reading bedtime stories and getting lots of hugs and kisses which is pretty awesome.

And yes, I really should have been studying for my boards instead of writing this post. But now I think its time to go home…

Tuesday!

So it’s Tuesday and I’ve added a new countdown to my blog – 27 Days until I take my state boards…Yes, this morning I took the plunge and scheduled my exam for my Texas Nursing Home Administrator Boards.  It’s not enough that I have the job, and I’m putting in the hours, the State of Texas says I still have to pass a test to keep the job.  Licensed Nursing Home Administrators have the joy of being licensed not only by the state they work in, but also by a Federal Board.  I still remember how nervous I was when I took my Federal Boards – the 30 seconds it takes the computer to calculate your score to let you know if you passed were probably the longest 30 seconds of my life.

I am licensed in Kansas and I am currently working on a provisional license in Texas, but it expires in December.  I have to know any number of things like licensure fees, time between meals if a substantial snack is offered – 16hrs – and square footage of a rooms. Administrators have to be generalists and know a little bit about everything: Nursing, Finance, Marketing, Therapy, Dining Services, housekeeping, Leadership and on and on it goes.  I tend to procrastinate on big things, but with my marathon in December and knowing that some big changes are on the horizon at work, I decided I might as well just get it done and behind me. Between now and December there will be no right time to take this test. So I have 27 days to study the 228 Pages of the, “Texas Administrative Code: Title 40 Social services and Assistance; Part 1 Department of Aging and Disability Service, Chapter 19 Nursing Facility Requirements for Licensure and Medicaid Certification.” Exciting stuff.

And of course I’m still living with my sister, dealing with the joys of Dallas traffic, working a more than fulltime job, and oh yes training for a marathon. And I am committing to staying on track with my health and weight loss goals, this isn’t a good enough reason to not be in control of how I feel and what I put in my body.   But hey, as I said in my last post, I’ve run 26.2 miles – for fun!  I can conquer this obstacle too!   And just in case someone out htere needs a little mid-week motivation this is one of my current favorite take on the world songs Mandisa’s Overcomer Happy Tuesday Everyone!

Running 13 Miles or just another Saturday Morning…

St. Jude

Donate today!

So I’ve signed up to run my 3rd Marathon this December, the St. Jude Memphis Marathon.  In addition to logging tons of training miles I am also working to raise $500 for the St. Jude Children’s hospital.  I hope you will help me reach my fundraising goal. Click here to go to my fundraising page

Yesterday I ran 13 miles with my new friends from the Dallas Running Club. I got lucky and was placed in the 4:40 pace group, what a great group to run with.  One of the things I’ve come to love about running is how nice and welcoming runners are to other runners.  I’ve only run with this group twice, but I already feel like I belong.  But then when you willing get up at 4:30 a.m. on a Saturday morning to spend anywhere from 2 -4 hours running you don’t necessarily need to go through all the preamble of sizing each other up that you find with other groups.  I’ve found that runners just get each other.

Excited and ready to run, if only I knew what was waiting for me…

I’ve been running consistently for a little over 4 years now and have completed lots of half marathons and 2 full marathons to date.  My last marathon was the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon in April, this is a really great race with lots of community support and for a cause that is near and dear to my heart – the Oklahoma City Memorial for the federal building that was bombed.  I was an undergrad at Oklahoma City University when the horrible event occurred, and I can still remember what the bomb sounded like when it went off.  Anyway, this is a very well-organized and supported race and I will run it again.  But back in April running the race was a truly awful, painful, miserable experience.  I’m not sure what went wrong other than I was on the verge of a major life change (moving to Dallas), but it was awful.  I very clearly remember promising myself somewhere around mile 20 that I would NEVER, EVER, EVER RUN A FULL MARATHON AGAIN – EVER.  But I imagine that running marathons is somewhat like childbirth (not that I have or ever will give birth), you forget very quickly how bad it was and your soon itching to give it another go.  And then someone says, I’ve signed up for the St. Jude Memphis Marathon, don’t you want to go too, and the next thing you know you’re signed up for marathon #3, that and I will do anything to put off packing up my house.

So there you go, I am now in the thick of training.  I spend my time fretting about my training plan and how many miles I need to run and how fast, when should I replace my shoes, how do I manage an hour-long commute with the need to run over an hour in the morning, where’s my Garmin and did I drink enough water today?  Running marathons is not easy for me, I am a mid to back of the pack runner on my best days.  I’ll probably never qualify for Boston and I’d be happy finishing sub 5:00 hr, but there’s something about the training process that I love and that keeps calling me back – never mind the peer 1170680_344348895699392_744886822_npressure.  I love knowing that I am tough enough to get out of bed at 4:30 am on a Saturday and complete a 13 mile training run, when I am facing a truly overwhelming challenge at work or in life it helps to remember that I’ve run 26.2 miles, twice!  I can do anything! Bring it Memphis, I’ll be ready!

Oh and just in case you where wondering, here’s a picture of Eddie Fox, my pride and joy.  I’ll be writing more about my four-legged, bob-tailed son in future posts.  He does not share my love of marathon training…
